  • Drew Hanlen On Fultz

    From the "Talking Schmidt" podcast:

[Markelle] had one of the most documented cases of, kind of, the YIPS of basketball in recent years where he completely forgot how to shoot, and had multiple hitches in his shot.
We've been working hard every day, working on re-wiring his body and getting a smooth stroke back into his shot. We're way ahead of pace where I thought we were going to be...I thought it was going to take me at least 6 weeks before we had a serviceable jump shot. We already started to shoot with a jump in week 2. It's not perfect yet, but I think by the end of the summer it will be perfect

I don't think he forgot. I think he was getting bad advice from his mom's boyfriend/trainer per Colangelo's wife. She mentioned about him trying to change his shot with unorthodox methods like shooting from a chair or while on his back on the floor. Total mess.

Oh it was 100% Keith Williams' fault. He fucked up the shot, which is when Markelle hurt his shoulder and then the yips started as a cumulative effect.

I think the only reason why they're not just flat out saying it was him, except for Barbara of course, is because Williams was basically family to Markelle and at this point, piling on could piss of Markelle and the Fultz family. Although, Barbara says he was forced out of Markelle's life anyway

I think it speaks a lot about Markelle that he realized that this father figure who he put all his trust in was the root cause of this and was willing to move on from him as his "trainer."

My faith is still strong. I'm probably too optimistic about it all but I still believe in 2 years, Markelle will be averaging 20-6-6 and this whole fiasco will be a "remember when"

Edit to add: Meant in response to Snake

I agree. If the rumors are true and he doesn't want to play Summer League, this season could get ugly for him if he doesn't hit the ground running. I'm still very concerned about this kid's maturity equating to him becoming a player at this level. I can't put my finger on it but I feel there's something lacking between the ears with him. I hope I'm wrong.

        After last night, I think there's a 50% chance he's gone.

He's definitely not the most mature 19 year old. I think him playing this season and averaging 15 a night you probably dont let the Snapchat filters and other stuff bother you as much. A season more or less lost to injury and mental issues, coupled with secrecy and half truths was annoying so any quirky thing he does outside of the game has it's annoyance level amplified. Just my opinion.
